Introducing Lent

Lent is a time when Christians intentionally make room in busy lives to draw nearer to God. It’s a period for preparing hearts and minds for the great festival of Easter. Lent can be a time to clear away the clutter from our lives through reflection and prayer, and to reassess our priorities. God offers us renewal and refreshment, healing and restoration.

Dancing to the Heartbeat of God

Mondays 10.30 a.m. Flat 1, Manor Farm, Milborne St Andrew, DT11 0JS

starting 23rd February

Dancing to the Heartbeat of God explores many aspects of discipleship. With a foreword and afterword by Archbishop Sarah Mullaly, the book’s 30 chapters are drawn from Christians across the globe. Through personal stories, testimonies, and reflections, the writers explore what it really means to follow Christ faithfully. Rooted in real experience rather than abstract theory, these voices speak with honesty, energy, and hope, and encourage us to share our faith with others.

Week 2—prayer, waiting, churchgoing

Week 4—grace, sacrifice, spaciousness, the Kingdom

Gravity Defied

A Lent Course based on the film Wicked

Tuesdays 7.30 p.m. Church Room, Puddletown

starting 24th February

Gravity Defied is a new Lent course by Rachel Mann, based on scenes and ideas in the Oscar-nominated movie Wicked. The course explores a number of themes relevant to each of us in the contemporary world. These include recognising what is good and right, and standing up for it even when mocked, the temptations of success, popularity and respectability, and the importance of friendship and solidarity. All is discussed within the context of Jesus’s ministry recorded in the Gospels, the temptations and threats that he faced, and persecution of those who followed him.

Week 1—Watching the film

Week 2—How do we judge what is good?

Week 3—Fear and loathing in the land of Oz

Week 4—What is a life well lived?

Week 5— The pitfalls of popularity

Week 6—The joy and cost of authentic living

Suggested Reading

Draw Near: Life-giving habits for Lent

Draw Near invites you to develop a rhythm of life that will help you grow as a disciple of Christ day by day, as you prepare to celebrate the mystery of God’s saving love at Easter. Each week a different contributor explores an activity central to Christian discipleship: worship, prayer, Scripture, communion, service to others and sharing the good news. For each day of Lent it offers daily Bible readings, images, short reflections, prayers and practical responses to help you draw near to God this Lent and beyond.

"Draw Near is all about teaching us how we can cultivate the habits and practices that will draw us nearer to God. And we will find that, in doing so, God will draw nearer to us, too." (Archbishops Sarah Mullaly and Stephen Cottrell)
