Introducing Lent
Lent is a time when Christians intentionally make room in busy lives to draw nearer to God. It’s a period for preparing hearts and minds for the great festival of Easter. Lent can be a time to clear away the clutter from our lives through reflection and prayer, and to reassess our priorities. God offers us renewal and refreshment, healing and restoration.
A Place for Us:
A Lent Course based on West Side Story
Tuesdays 7.30 p.m.* Church Room, Puddletown
starting 28th February
In 1957, Broadway saw the new production of a musical retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics from Stephen Sondheim. This was West Side Story. A film version followed in 1962. Sixty years later and based more closely on the stage show than its predecessor, Stephen Spielberg directed a second film adaptation. Our course is based on this. It picks up many Lenten themes: fear, love, betrayal, death and reconciliation.
Using key scenes from the film and passages of Scripture, the course authors, Lavinia Byrne and Jane McBride, provide introductions, reflections and questions for discussion.
Week 1 West Side Story — Watching the film (149 minutes)*
Week 2 Belonging and inclusion
Week 3 Otherness and difference
Week 4 The gift of love
Week 5 The promise of a place for us
Week 6 The tragedy of betrayal
*with the exception of Week 1, each session will end at 9 p.m.
Women of Holy Week
